Synthetic Rutile
Synthetic rutile is a man-made transparent rutile, sometimes used as a diamond
simulant. It is doubly refractive, with refractive indices of 2.616-2.903, a
birefringence of .287, a specific gravity of 4.26, a dispersion of 0.330, and a
hardness (Mohs) of 6 to 6; its chemical composition is TiO2. Colors
include light yellow, brownish red, and greenish blue to bluish green. Produced
since 1948; marketed under a number of proprietary names.
